Origin and history

The custom of Haftsin originates from Zoroastrian times and symbolizes the A new beginning of life , the Spring and the Victory of light over darkness . Nowruz always falls on the Beginning of spring (usually March 20th or 21st) and marks the astronomical beginning of the new year according to the solar calendar.

In the past, seven different objects with sacred meaning were set out for the New Year's table, which were later replaced by the seven "S" elements known today.

The seven "S"s of Haftsinn and their meanings

1. Sabzeh – Wheat, barley or lentil sprouts
   → Symbol for Growth, renewal and fertility .
2. Samanu – Sweet pudding made from wheat germ
   → Stands for Prosperity, patience, and the sweetness of life .
3. Senjed – Dried oleaster fruit
   → Symbolizes Love and compassion .
4. Seer - Garlic
   → Signs for Health and protection .
5. Seeb - Apple
   → Stands for Beauty and health .
6. Somāq – Sumac spice
   → Symbol for the Sunrise and the victory of good over evil .
7. Serkeh - Vinegar
   → Stands for Patience and acceptance .
